Guterres acknowledged the establishment of the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, which he believes can enhance the safety, fairness, and widespread benefits of AI through science-led governance. The panel, likened to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, is set to release its inaugural report ahead of the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance in July.
As AI technology advances rapidly, Guterres warned of the challenges posed by the technology outpacing our understanding and governance capabilities. He underlined the need for meaningful human oversight in critical decision-making processes, ensuring accountability and preventing the outsourcing of responsibility to algorithms.
