Malta is set to become the first country to provide all its residents with one year of free ChatGPT Plus access, following a deal sealed with OpenAI in 2026.
The program, which begins in May 2026, grants ChatGPT Plus subscriptions to Maltese residents who complete a free course on artificial intelligence usage. Access will expand progressively as more citizens finish the training.
The initiative involves OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, and the Maltese government, with the agreement covering residents both within Malta and Maltese citizens living overseas.
The deal positions Malta as the first nation to offer this kind of nationwide AI tool access, tied directly to a structured training program. This approach suggests the program is designed not only to broaden access to AI technology but also to ensure residents have a foundational understanding of how to use it before receiving their subscriptions.
