Google announced in May 2026 that its Photos app will gain a new “Wardrobe” feature powered by artificial intelligence, allowing users to build a searchable digital closet from their existing photo library and virtually try on outfits before wearing them.
The feature works by scanning a user’s photo library and automatically identifying clothing items that appear across past photos. Those items are then compiled into a dedicated wardrobe collection inside the app, organized by categories such as tops, bottoms, and jewelry. According to Google’s announcement blog post, the feature will “soon catalog the clothes you’re wearing in photos and create a digital closet that puts your wardrobe at your fingertips.”
Beyond cataloging, users will be able to mix and match items from their digital closet, save combinations to themed moodboards — such as everyday work outfits, summer weddings, or travel looks — and share selections with friends. The virtual try-on component lets users preview how clothing combinations will look on them before actually wearing them.
The feature builds on virtual try-on technology Google has offered since 2023 through Google Search, Google Shopping, and Google Images. That earlier tool initially let users select from a range of real models to approximate their body type, and was later updated to allow users to upload a full-body photo of themselves to see how specific garments would look on their own body.
Google referenced the 1995 film Clueless as a cultural touchstone for the concept, in which the main character uses a digital system to mix and match outfits before getting dressed. The company has not specified an exact release date for the Wardrobe feature, stating only that it is “coming soon.”
