Google’s search engine went down for thousands of users in India on Monday, May 12, 2026, with complaints flooding social media and outage tracking platforms within minutes of the disruption beginning.
More than 3,300 complaints were logged on Downdetector at around 10:23 am IST. Of those reports, 57% were related to Search, 28% involved content not loading properly, and 11% cited issues with the website itself.
Users attempting to access Google were met with the following message: “Server Error. We’re sorry but it appears that there has been an internal server error while processing your request. Our engineers have been notified and are working to resolve the issue. Please try again later.”
The outage appeared to be short-lived. Following the initial spike in complaints, Downdetector data showed a sharp decline in reports, suggesting the service was restored relatively quickly.
Reactions on social media reflected surprise at the rarity of the event. “I can’t believe I’m saying this but Google dot com is actually down. I don’t remember the last time it happened,” one user wrote on X. Another posted, “man a google outage is rare. the 4 horsemen are incoming.” On Reddit, a user noted: “First time I’ve seen Google go down in a very, very long time. Honestly impressive track record.”
The incident highlights how even the most widely used online services remain vulnerable to server-side failures. For the many users who rely on Google Search as a primary tool for information, even a brief outage can be disruptive — and, judging by the social media response, notably unexpected.
