GitLab announced in 2026 that it is cutting jobs and reorganizing its operations to redirect resources toward the growing market for AI agents, according to CEO Bill Staples.
The company plans to reduce management layers and restructure its research and development teams as part of the shift. GitLab intends to integrate AI agents into internal workflows to automate processes and improve operational efficiency.
While some roles may be affected or reshaped by AI integration, the company indicated that other positions will be expanded to sustain momentum through the transition.
The move is driven by GitLab’s aim to capitalize on what it describes as emerging “agentic” opportunities — a segment of the AI market focused on software agents capable of executing tasks autonomously.
The restructuring could signal a broader shift in how enterprise software companies are allocating headcount and investment, with AI-driven automation increasingly influencing workforce decisions. For GitLab employees and customers, the reorganization may affect how products are developed and supported going forward.
