Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, has announced plans for the company to catch up with leading AI labs like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google by the end of this year. Musk aims for xAI to surpass its competitors significantly within the next three years. This announcement follows a recent reorganization within xAI that resulted in significant staff changes, including the departure of several co-founders.
Responding to a user post on X, Musk stated, “xAI will catch up this year and then exceed them all by such a long distance in three years that you will need the James Webb telescope to see who is in second place.” Musk highlighted xAI’s recent success when two Grok AI models outperformed Gemini and ChatGPT in benchmarks. However, Google’s subsequent release of Gemini 3.0 and 3.1 models quickly claimed the top spots.
Musk’s strategy includes leveraging xAI’s chatbot for text and video generation, despite facing backlash for deepfake image generation on X. In response to xAI’s competitive challenges, Musk announced a complete rebuild of the company, focusing on enhancing their coding tools to rival products like OpenAI’s Codex and Claude Code. This overhaul also involved the departure of most of xAI’s co-founders, leaving only two of the original eleven.
